Category VI

What Others Are Saying

This has been an excellent entrance into 2018 for Category VI! We have been featured in the Newfoundland Herald again!!! This time, our album WAR IS HELL has been featured in their Top albums list for 2017!

Thanks so much to The Herald and Dillon Collins for having us among so many awesome local acts! We super appreciate the support!

WAR IS HELL

https://www.metalcrypt.com/pages/review.php?revid=10053

"If you dig acts like Seven Kingdoms, Mindmaze, or Helion Prime, then I'd call this a no brainer although Category VI do separate themselves from their contemporaries with a more pugilistic edge, and a lethal injection of classic metal attitude which would call to mind Judas Priest or Mercyful Fate. Overall a solid record. You could do far worse than check this out. "

"With themes that criss-cross from war and death, inner and external struggles, loss and conquest, War is Hell sees the four piece at its finest. Vocalist Amanda Gosse brings a ferocity that is carried with a subtle restraint well beyond her years, an emotive confidence and ballsyness that carries the pace from opening slash to closing strum. Not lost in the fray, the album is propelled by the sublime talents of seasoned veteran instrumentalists Geoff Waye and Keith Jackman, who between them have decades of world-class artisanship under their belts and are true pioneers to Newfoundland’s thriving metal landscape."

"Power Metal is often a strange beast to get your head around, with many bands mired in excessively po-faced fantasy imagery, and either disappear up their own arses or bury themselves in cheddar. They are also often criminally lacking in self-awareness. Thankfully Canadian crew Category VI do not fall into that term, category (sorry). They flirt with it but never hurtle headlong in the Stinking Bishop souffle. In fact, “War Is Hell” – their second album is good heavy stuff!"

"War Is Hell has Category VI on the verge of greater things; of finally unlocking their innate potential as a band, of Gosse elevating herself from a mere frontwoman to an underground icon, and their blooming songwriting finally matching their ambitions.War Is Hell is that kind of record. One where a band's entire future hinges upon. The Great White North has given the underground its fair share of now-classic bands in a variety of metal genres. Whether or not Category VI becomes the next institution depends on how they handle this record. There are plenty of bands with not half their promise that remain inexplicably popular with the masses. It's high time for Category VI to claim their rightful place in the Canadian - as well as the international scene. If War Is Hell is any indication they are on the threshold. "

"There are elements of the early 80s metal bands such as Maiden and Dio written through this, and this manages to feel as up to date as songs like “Last In Line” and “The Trooper” somehow do. Track after track is ramped up and the end result is very satisfying, modern sounds laced with nostalgia."

"Unlike the trend-driven sub-genres, the sound of Category VI is timeless and WAR IS HELL has already shown that they are ready to take it to the international stage. "

"This album, their second full length, is a power metal tour de force. Although I don’t think they sound like either band per say, they do give off a classic metal vibe like JUDAS PRIEST or MERCYFUL FATE. "

"This is a pretty decent metal album, that will get you headbanging away no problem. Full on metal riffing, powerhouse songs and melodic vibes. The subject matters goes from all out warfare to battles within your mind etc..I like this album a lot and it has really grown on me. The songs are delivered in fine style with plenty of variety in their construction. The stand out tracks for me are STRIKE OF THE AXE, CROSSING THE AVALON and the title track WAR IS HELL, but I expect there will be favourites for everyone. Great 80s style metal feel to the album overall, and not a growl to be heard, which does make a change these days to hear some straight forward clean metal vocals. And Amanda does a pretty good job delivering the songs with her strong gutsy vocals.. Yep an album defitinly worth adding to your metal collection. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED....9/10."

FIREBORN

https://www.facebook.com/MegawattMayhem

Thanks so much for the kind words JP, we're honored!!! JP is co-host of one of the world's longest running Heavy Metal radio shows, Megawatt Mayhem, heard weekly for 27+ years on CJSW 90.9FM and www.cjsw.com. He personally picked Category VI - Fireborn as his #3 Canadian band in 2013 installment of their annual 4 hour-Year-In Review show. JP says, "Each year I hear dozens and dozens, maybe even high as a 100 Canadian Metal albums, and I was blown away by the professional sound, attitude and kick-ass songwriting. The performances are stellar and vocalist Amanda Gosse is an emerging global talent. Although it came out late in 2013, FIREBORN is one of the most exciting debut albums I have heard in ages and it easily found a slot in my Top Canadian List for 2013."

Thanks to Ben Spencer at Metal-Rules.com for giving us such a great review this month! "What was great about the record is how everything fits together seamlessly, from the instrumentation, vocals and influences these guys come with a precision that is undeniably their own. Each track feels unique and offers up something that is both refreshing on the ears and authentic. This is a record that feels as rewarding in its wholeness and distinctive style. Top work guys."

Thanks to Chris at http://blackwindmetal.com/ for the great review! "Think dueling lead guitars from Iron Maiden, think venom-edged riffs courtesy of Mercyful Fate, think of complex rhythms that Crimson Glory blazed the trail with, and finally, think of towering epics that the likes of Manilla Road and Fates Warning crafted with their forbidden magic........Category VI houses ample talent, and as a debut album I??d say Fireborn stands as a perfect platform for future releases."

"Hailing from St John??s, Newfoundland is a promising new metal band called Category VI. They are the only female-fronted metal band in the city and according to their promotional material, one of the few melodic metal bands. The band??s debut album, FIREBORN is the product of a do-it-yourself work ethic, often the reality of unsigned bands. However, as the cover art and solid production values attest, this package is instilled with professional qualities."

"Everything on this album worked. From the high level of musicianship to exploration of their lyrical journeys the record felt both cohesive and whole. What??s more is how each song was distinctive within its own right but managed to fit together with organically offering up something that is as versatile as it is strongly rooted in the Metal genre. Top work guys."

"A debut of a very good standard and in a style all metal lovers will remember and enjoy. Younger bands should listen, as Category VI has done, to the old legendary bands to understand what metal is today. Strongly recommended."

Short review of Category VI showcase set for Music NL "Heavy Stage" showcase, Nov. 2017. "1:15 a.m., Club One: If you like Iron Maiden, you have to check out Category VI, a four-piece fronted by Amanda Gosse, the female Bruce Dickinson. Their epic power metal did not fall on deaf ears, as the band showed off their insane talent by playing tunes from their latest release, “War Is Hell.” It was awesome to see so many women on stage on Friday night, and in the male-dominated metal music scene, Category VI proves that women can rock as just as hard or harder than their male counterparts."

"Category VI kept up with Allagash, giving listeners a blast from the past with their ’80s melodic metal. Vocalist Amanda Gosse, the only female performer on the roster, shocked the crowd with her Iron Maiden-esque powerhouse vocals. Their punchy set ended with the brand new title track from their upcoming release, War is Hell."
